A fantastically fresh and fragrant dry white with hints of peach, nutmeg, almond and musk. Very refreshing and brilliant with oriental cuisine.
Ribera O Fournier is the third estate in Jose Manuel Ortega's winery empire which stretches from Chile to Argentina and now includes Spain. Both Jancis Robinson and Steven Spurrier and highlighted Jose as a world class producer in all three countries.
The Spanish estate is located in the premium red wine region of Ribera del Duero, and is planted with 60 Ha of Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo), a large proportion of which is 22 to 52 years old. The remarkable vineyards are situated in a bend of the Duero River; a sheer 15m cliff face separates the fast-flowing river from the edge of the vineyards. The soil combination of sand and large pebble stones reminiscent of Chateauneuf du Pape. This soil type is unique to O Fournier's estate within the Ribera del Duero region and the vines benefit from extended ripening hours due to the heat retaining qualities of the stones. This, coupled with the 700m altitude of the estate creates huge potential for the production of world class wines.
The refurbished winery is housed in low terracotta buildings topped with Spanish tiles. Inside it is 'wine tech' heaven with specially designed conical stainless steel tanks, touch screen computer controls and a dedicated humidified room for the large wooden fermenters where the Spiga and Alfa Spiga are made. The wines are all pressed in a basket press and the winery works on gravity to minimise the use of pumps.
